Originally developed as a Graphical User Interface for Panorama Tools (hence the name), PTGui now is a full featured photo stitching application.

Adjustments can be made to the light position and intensity and this can be previewed in GIGAmacro Capture in real time using the live view image from the camera.PTGui is panoramic stitching software for Windows and Mac OSX. Subject illumination is provided by a combination of high intensity LED for setup and Macro Twin Lite flashes. The camera, optics, positioning, and focus are controlled by specialized software (GIGAmacro Capture) to automate the process of capturing the images. The standard configuration uses a Canon T6i DSLR Camera (24 megapixel), with the Canon MP-E 65mm Macro lens.
Together, these tools allow for precise positioning of the camera in relation to the subject, and automation of the process of taking images in a specific pattern.Ī range of different cameras and optics can be used with the Magnify2 imaging system, according to the use case. It includes specialized robotic hardware, photography equipment, and software programming. The GIGAmacro Magnify2 is specifically designed to make all aspects of this task efficient and straightforward. The process of taking thousands of images of a small subject can be quite difficult shooting the images manually exacerbates the challenges of precise positioning, focusing, and subsequent file management.

Free accounts are available for our online GIGAmacro Viewer, registration is required, and this enables a user to save annotations etc., as well as upload their own gigapixel images for viewing and sharing.
This approach to imaging and studying subjects is typically used for research, but can also be applied to curriculum, interactive exhibits, and industrial quality control. Images can be shared with the public and others, such as researchers – both publicly and in private groups. As well as annotating and measuring objects in the image, side-by-side comparisons can be made. GIGAmacro Viewer is available online and gigapixel images can be viewed easily with any modern browser. The resulting gigapixel image can be explored using a tiled-image viewer, (you’ve seen and used one every time you use Google Maps where, as you zoom in, the image gets more and more detailed), designed specifically for gigapixel imagery. How photographs are combined to make a gigapixel image. This is a diagram of the combined techniques of stacking and then stitching a set of photographs to produce a single high-resolution image which is sharp throughout. We first “focus stack” the individual photographs to increase the depth of field and then “stitch” the photographs together to create a higher resolution image. In this process, we digitally combine the images using a “Stack & Stitch” methodology. Image stitching or photo stitching is the process of combining multiple photographic images with overlapping fields of view to produce a segmented panorama or high-resolution image.Ĭombining Thousands of Photographs into a Single Seamless GIGAmacro To create a gigapixel image, we use a technique generally known as “Stack and Stitch”.įocus stacking is a technique which combines multiple images taken at different focus planes to give a resulting image with a greater apparent depth of field. The GIGAmacro images featured in the GIGAmacro Viewer are assembled from hundreds, or more often thousands, of individual photographs.
